Wedding dresses

One of the major events that got me really excited about sewing again was making the bridesmaids dresses for my wedding.

I had so much fun with my Mum, and my bridesmaids (my sister, Emma and friend Elle) choosing the style of dresses and fabrics to make them in. We had so many laughs as we made muslins to fit the bodices and there was sooooooo much net in the skirts! Although it was obviously time consuming I would recommend it to anyone.

The pattern we chose was butte rick B6094. We chose a fairly heavy weight stretch cotton in navy blue polkadot. Purchased from Sharma's in Nottingham.

The pattern was fairly simple to follow although we did do some adjustments to fit each bridesmaid. It's the first time I have ever made muslins before sewing  a project but since these were such important dress it seemed like a very good idea! Also the pictures of trying them on are priceless...

The dress is made in three sections with the top having a middle band which allows the dress to be fitted perfectly in the middle. The pattern option we chose for the dresses had a large circle skirt. In order to get it to flare out in a 50s style we added a net ruffle to the lining. There was so much net!

It took us about 3 weeks to make the dresses because we were being super careful!

The back of the dresses has a V-shaped neckline with a fold out collar. We secured the collar down with flower buttons. I even had matching buttons on my shoes :)

The dresses turned out really well. They fitted both bridesmaids perfectly and really have been worn since. They even looked great with different shoes - including wellington boots. The full skirts meant they were great for relish dancing too...
